The Golden Steer Steak & Rib House was established in 1964 by long time Kent residents Don & Dar Raftis. At that time the original menu (which is still posted in our coffee shop area) boasted a “Burger Plate Special” including salad or soup and potatoes or fries for a whopping $1.00!

In 1999 Jim & Suzanne, along with close family friends Kelly & Janine Sturm, bought the restaurant. In keeping with the established theme of Community Involvement, they began many new traditions. Just a few of these are… our Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast, Historical Society’s Annual Fundraising Dinner Auction & Kent Food Bank’s Annual Fundraising Breakfast .

In October of 2007, Kelly & Janine headed to the sunshine desert of Arizona and Jim & Suzanne took full ownership.

Jim, Suzanne & their 3 kids Mike, Josh & Krysta moved to Kent in 1993. All 3 children attended East Hill Elementary, Kent Jr. High and graduated from Kent Meridian High School. At one time or another, all three have worked with us here at the Golden Steer. In fact, on weekends when Krysta is not teaching our local Kent elementary school children, she can be found waiting on our great customers.

Jim & Suzanne continue to be involved in many community organizations, boards & activities. When not at the restaurant, you can find them serving the local community and supporting the local businesses.
